In the three-part "Race and Science" lesson, we discussed what Race is and what it is not. Race is not nationality, religion, culture or ethnicity. Race is a socially constructed idea designed to separate people based on physical characteristics, namely skin color. We then explored the idea of confirmation bias, using the stereotype that "Black people are exceptionally good at sports." Labeling a map and learning about the different characteristics that come with living close to and far from the equator also enforced the idea that race is not biologically real.
To conclude the lesson, we talked about Columbus, his journey to the western hemisphere, and the 3 systems of labor. This brought us back to race, racism and it's true meaning, to oppress. To end the unit, we discussed the race construct and how it has adapted through time.
